Like many buildings in this part of Hollywood, this museum has its own celebrated history. It was one of Hollywood’s first exclusive nightclubs – having opened in 1930 and catered to many of the A-listers of that time including Jean Harlow, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Gloria Swanson. Also validated parking can be obtained by parking next door to the museum in the Mel’s Drive in Parking Lot.
Often, though, the visitors pay admission for the current shows instead. In “Titanic,” they can view authentic artifacts from the ocean liner’s 1912 voyage, which Movieland once portrayed in a scene. And in “Bodies,” they can view specimens from actual cadavers — a fitting choice, perhaps, for a building that once prided itself on making still figures look like flesh.

During the Academy Awards there is no VIP room and this room is not closed off from the main lobby. Dolby Theatre (formerly Kodak Theatre) is located almost next door to TCL Chinese Theatre is home to the Academy Awards as well as many other star studded events. Compared to nearby historical theatres, the Dolby is a relatively new addition to Hollywood having opened in 2001. Over 94 million dollars was put into the construction of this – its unbelievable inside – this is one of the highlights of Hollywood and we highly recommend taking a tour. Be sure to stop at the Hollywood Visitor’s center (ground floor on Hollywood Blvd) to pick up a coupon for several dollars off admission to the Dolby Theatre.
Star struck tourists apparently see this as an affordable alternative to meeting the real celebs. Step out of the glittering elevator on the 3rd floor and you might take a second glance at the person seated in front of you. It is “George Clooney” – after a few passes by you notice that one person holding a camera here does not move like the rest of the camera toting young tourists. This was one of the earliest outdoor pedestrian malls in Los Angeles – having opened in 1936. A colorful globe spins on top of a 60 foot tower – and the entire building is in the shape of a boat. A museum such as this one would have to constantly be on the lookout for updates to records. During our visit, we found some of their exhibits were somewhat out of date – especially the one on sports and some of their celebrity exhibits. Greek Theatre is located along North Vermont Ave off of Los Feliz Blvd. This, along with Griffith Observatory was built in 1929 from money left by the founder of Griffith Park, Griffith J. Griffith. The location is in a canyon and was chosen as the outdoor acoustics are very good. Griffith had a bad side to his personality; during a vacation to Santa Monica he shot and severely wounded his wife, and as a result spent time in San Quentin.
There is also a Chamber of Horrors, featuring classic and current movie monsters. A battle ensues within the house of wax after the twins find Wade and Nick pulls Carly away after wanting to help him, Carly beats Bo in the face to death with a baseball bat. Vincent enraged over his brother’s death then chases Carly upstairs. Back to the campsite as Paige stripdances Blake but their background music is abruptly turned off. As Blake goes to switch it back on he finds the missed call on his mobile.
We’ve been on Hollywood Blvd during the Academy Awards numerous times and there is always an air of special excitement on this one day per year. Hollywood Blvd around the theatre is completely closed down as are side streets and the metro bypasses it’s normal Hollywood/Highland station stop. Helicopters, planes and even a Goodyear Blimp hover above the theatre. Preparation and rehearsals for the Academy Awards takes at least 3.5 weeks before the actual “big night”. On their way to a football game, Carly Jones, her troubled brother Nick, her boyfriend Wade Felton and their friends – Dalton Chapman, Paige Edwards and Blake Johnson – set up camp for the night in a wooded area.
